LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH

With all our problems connecting to the inernet I have forgotten to tell you about the village we stayed in, in Devon. It was called Lynton and is on thenorthern coast in Exmoor National Park ( I think that's right !)
The majority of Lynton was perched below our cottage – just down the steep, steep lane with tiny streets winding around and very impressive houses and hotels.

Lynton is a lovely Victorian village nestled into the very steep hills with a sharp drop to the village of Lynmouth which is situated on the Lyn river where it flows into the Bristol Channel.

This is the view from the windows of our cottage
.
To get from Lynton down to Lynmouth there is a steep walking track but we decided to take the tram car for 3 GBP return.

T he views as you descend/ascend are spectacular.

This railway was built in 1890, takes about fifteen people and goes nearly vertically down a cliff !
It is amazing as it is powered by water, the tramcar at the top fills up with water and the one at the bottom empties its tank and away you go.

Lynmouth has a small harbour with a main street with a lot of art and craft shops, pubs and tea rooms. There are large guest houses perched on the hills and thatched cottages and pubs line the lower parts of the village.

A delightful spot. We picked a winner here.

Cheers.

  1. It is a lovely spot isn't it? We spent many happy hokidays on Exmoor in the past and loved all of it. Lynton/Lynmouth suffered severe flooding back in 1962 and 16 people lost their lives but to see it today you can't imagine how terrible it must have been with all that water rushing down from Exmoor through Linton and on down to Lynmouth. Glad the weather was good for your visit however! That cliff railway is good fun isn't it? You certainly have picked some lovely locations for your stays.

PS the mugs are lovely and in regular use!
