QUEENSLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS

In my travels overseas I am always interested to see local schools and I am often struck my the similarities and differences I observe to those back home.
As a lot of my blogland "friends" seem to be teachers or retired teachers I thought you might be interested to see what Primary schools are like in Queensland.
( If you think you will be bored by this topic it's time to go off and visit another blog NOW ! )
           ..............................................................................................................

Our Primary school students begin school with Prep the year they turn 5 and most children are 12 when they finish primary school at the end of year 7.

Most Queensland schools are made from timber and the older ones are often what we call "high set" meaning the classrooms are often upstairs with empty space underneath which is used for eating lunch, shade and wet weather play.

In some more modern schools these areas have been utilised for classrooms.

The most recent design is for sprawling low set designs

modules, joined by covered walkways

often with flat rooves.

A very small number of older, usually inner city, schools look like this.

Inside I have observed classrooms look similar where ever you go,

with brightly coloured wall decoration and shelving, carpeted floors

and fans in place of heating. I'm very pleased to say that many schools now have air-conditioning.
I have very unpleasant memories of 36C temperatures and 28 hot eleven year olds crammed into their seats after lunch break. It doesn't matter how hot it is it seems children, boys especially, have to run around like lunatics in their playtime !!! ( sometimes the "perfume" from these hot bodies could knock you over when you enter a classroom !)

Furniture varies but is usually individual with a small storage drawer underneath each desk.

Outside is where the major differences become evident.

Our schools have large areas of outdoor, usually grassed, places to play.

These grassed areas usually comprise a large oval for football, cricket, softball, soccer

as well as all manner of athletic pursuits and treed areas for children to play all manner of games.

Trees are employed for shade

but shade covers are employed too.

Any sealed outdoor areas are used for all manner of purposes including basketball, netball and handball courts.

Some schools have their own swimming pool.

Lunch is usually brought from home and eating time is supervised in a shady area.
Every school has a "tuckshop" manned by mothers on a voluntary basis where children usually order from a menu and have their order delivered to their classroom in a paper bag. Tuckshops are often only open once or twice a week.

Most children wear school uniforms to school.

and they are designed to be comfortable in the hot weather.

There are usually several options to choose from with polo type shirts and shorts being the most popular choice for both boys and girls.

Teachers clothing is varied but usually fairly casual with more "dressy" options sometimes seen in city schools.

Hats are a very important part of school uniforms

with a " no hat, no play" rule usually in place in all schools.

Sunglasses are beginning to make an appearance too.

So there you have it, sort of in a nutshell. Hope I haven't bored you to tears.

Cheers.

PS. I know that there are issues with publishing photos of children on the internet but as all of today's photos are all from school sites on the internet I figure they are already out there.

FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY

Ho! Ho! It's Friday again and that means joining Mrs PJs for Favourite Things Friday.
Just click on the link on my sidebar to see what other bloggers have for their favourite things.

My Favourite Thing this week is ......

Movies!

Yes, I really love going to the movies at the cinema.
Not really at home
I love the big screen
the big volume
no adds to distract you
the sound of other people laughing in the funny bits.
Last Sunday afternoon we went to see this movie.

The Social Network

What an amazing story.
We really enjoyed it .

Here are a few of my favourites from the past.

My top two.
I've watched them both over and over.

In fact I love Hugh Grant. He makes me laugh.

Love Harry Potter - books and movies

An oldie but a goodie

One of the best things at the cinema is the trailers of upcoming releases.

Here are a few I've yet to see that look interesting.

Rabbit Hole

The Tourist

Looks like there are plenty of interesting movies coming up.

Cheers.

PARTY TIME

This is a very busy time of year isn't it?
Here in Oz it is the end of the school year so there are all sorts of activities if you are a teacher  or a parent of school age children.
High school leavers are kicking up their heels and celebrating the end of their school days,
most of them planning the years ahead at university and some of them choosing to head into the world of work.
So we have lots of  " breaking-up " parties.
This may be a new term for some of you ( especially Americans).
A breaking -up party is one you have before you head off to the beach for a holiday.

These parties come thick and fast and usually require some sort of contribution to the food ( bring a plate  - preferably with something nice to share on it !!!)

With this in mind I set about cooking this slice.
It's always a winner and quick and easy.

Looks yummy doesn't it?
That's because of the secret ingredient - Condensed Milk !!

When you cook it , it goes all caramel and delicious.

Here's what you need:-

90g butter
1 cup sweet biscuit crumbs
1½cups Choc Bits
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup chopped mixed nuts( I just used peanuts this time but any will do )
400g can Condensed milk

and this is how you make it:-

* Line a slice pan with baking paper

* Melt butter and mix with crushed biscuits. Press evenly into base of tin.

* Cover base evenly with choc-bits, then coconut then nuts

* Drizzle with condensed milk trying to cover nuts completely.

* Bake in a moderate oven for about 30 minutes ( watch carefully it will brown quickly at the end )

* Cool in pan before cutting then store in refrigerator

Small pieces now, it's quite rich.

a winner every time

:::::

We are feeling very soggy now with all the rain
but it is working its magic on the garden.

Remember the poor Mandabila that the dogs all but destroyed?

It's sending up new shoots from the base !
Let's hope they can reach the fence and replace all the bits that have died off up there.

This pretty little bush is really enjoying the rain too.

Don't know its proper name.

We just call it Bridal Bush.

This afternoon we were treated to TWO complete rainbows in the sky to the north east

and a bit of blue sky is trying very hard to peek through the clouds.

Cheers.

AWAKENING THE SPIRIT

Now that it is December I'm getting into the spirit.
The Christmas spirit that is.

I am beginning to realise that I might actually enjoy Christmas this year!

I'm well on the way with my present shopping.
Not fussing too much and worrying about the gifts
Just cruising ... and choosing things, little tokens that I would be happy to receive.

My friend Lynnie and I have been making a few cards.

We took them to this little market today

These enterprising young ladies had a stall too.

These charming hair clips.....

All their own work

These are a couple of the other stalls

but the weather was wet, wet, wet...
and Queenslanders don't venture out in the rain.
I know, I know we are weak and sooky but we are not used to it.
Remember it hasn't rained for 10 years !

I've started wrapping pressies. Just need to get the tree in place.

And finally...
you know how I hanker after snow...

and a WHITE CHRISTMAS is high on my wish list

Tony has done the best he can for the time being.

Guess it will have to do ...

.... for now !

BACK IN CONTACT

 Hello, I'm back.
My goodness I miss you all when I'm away.
There seems to be heaps to catch up on so I'll be cruising around the blogs doing just that over the next couple of days.

After about 10 years of drought it is lovely to regularly see this  from my front door,

and this from the back.

The hills and mountains are almost completely obscured by the rain.

Lovely!
It is keeping the temperature at a very pleasant 27C.

The plants are loving it ...
..... and the huge green frog who has taken up residence in here is making quite a racket as he celebrates the rain.

Today I made a purchase that I vowed I would never do.

I bought a pair of these....

Just the thing to wear in the GARDEN.

Nowhere else!

Ideal for there - especially in this weather......

..... but they won't be leaving this property.

I've even seen people on overseas flights wearing these monstrosities !

Do YOU own a pair ?

Cheers.
