FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY

I'm a bit late posting this but it is still Friday somewhere in the world so that will do.
I'm joining Shay from Quilting in My Pyjamas for FTF.
If you'd like to join in just pop over to Shay's blog via the button on my sidebar.

My favourite thing today is people who have the courage and determination to challenge themselves to the limit.

My lovely daughter Sally is one of those people.

In the last couple of years Sally has taken up running - distance running - and she loves it.
Participating in this sport has only begun in her thirties and she has built up her participation until this year she entered in the Gold Coast Marathon that was held last weekend.

She entered in the Half Marathon - that's running 21 kilometres !

Of course Mum and Dad went along as support.
The race started at 6:00am in a park on the Broadwater on the sunny Gold Coast.
As we live an hour away we didn't try to be there for the start. We had been warned we would not be able to get near enough to the starting line because huge crowds were expected.

There certainly were huge numbers of people there, all straining to catch a glimpse of their special someone as they ran past.

Sprinkled amongst the runners were the pace runners.....

dressed in special costumes to distinguish them from the others. Here is the 2 hour pace maker. Sally was hoping to be near her so we took up our position ( pre-arranged with Sally ) near this sign.

Then we waited anxiously....

Scanning faces,

looking out for pink shoes,

pink shirts
as the runners thundered by

until.....

there she was!

running with a smile on her face

keeping up a cracking pace

even though her legs were burning

joyful even....

swerving towards Dad as he snapped away!

A winner !!

Time:  2 hours and 4 minutes to run 21k

Very proud !

She could even smile through the pain of a post race massage !

While all of this was happening, on another part of the course, the 42k marathon was well underway.

We stayed around to watch the winner sprint past us in 2+ hours

Second

Third

and about 2 hours later ( in the heat of the day ) came Sally's friend Lauren

42 k in 4hours and 20 minutes !
Well done girls !

FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY

This morning I was required to rise early ( for me ) and deliver the car to the garage to be serviced.
I had to be there by 7:30 so that meant that I set off by 7:00am  without breakfast.
Not even a cup of tea!!!

Luckily, not far down the road is a very pleasant cafe where I sat among the foliage, shaded from the hot sun and had a leisurely breakfast while I waited for the car.

and as I sat there reading my magazine after my breakfast of eggs benedict I puzzled over what I would write about for Favourite Things Friday.

Then inspiration hit me !

One of my favourite things EVER is

breakfast !!!

I like to start the day with some fruit:

kiwifruit
strawberries
mango
pawpaw
 bananas
pineapple
pears
rock melon

followed by my absolute favourite
eggs

poached are my favourite
with bacon or ham
tomato
avocado

or perhaps cooked in a bread cup.

and finished off with a cup of tea.

So there you have my contribution for FTF today.
Pop over to Shay's blog to read more favourite things
or even join in !

Cheers.

FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY

Yay! It's Favourite Things Friday again.
I'm linking up with Shay once again.
Why not join in the fun?

Today this is my favourite thing........

....

.....

.......

bare  feet  !

Yep, as soon as I'm in the door off come the shoes and I'm comfy.

Now that Summer's here you'll never find me with shoes on in the house.
I love to paddle round the house on the cool tiles in my bare feet.

Shoes are for going out in,
dressing up,
prancing around.....
but

bare feet

are

heaven !!!

FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY - PICNICS

As usual I'm linking up with Shay for Favourite Things Friday.

Why don't you click on the link on my sidebar and see what others are writing about their favourite things.

PICNICs

There was a time when our children were small that we would pack up the car and toodle off for a picnic most weekends.

All we needed was a grassy spot in the shade of a tree somewhere in the country

or by the sea

where we could set the table with our special cloth,

put out plates and cups, thermos and soft drink, bread rolls and BBQ chicken

and
 r. e . l . a . x . x. x . .  . . . .

Now there's just the two of us ( Darby and Joan !!)
we don't do it often enough but recently,

on the spur of the moment,

we grabbed all the necessary and sped off for a short visit to Bribie Island about an hour and a half 's drive from home.

It was mid-week and not a brilliant day but the sun came out

and so did the camera.

The wild life was co-operative

and it was oh so peaceful.

Ahhhhhhh..... we should do this more often.

Cheers.

FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY ( or Saturday ? )

Oops!

I know I'm late for Favourite Things Friday.
Surely it's still Friday somewhere in the world?

Click here for one of my favourite things.

It is an Australian Magpie doing what they do best.
It's a sound that you can hear anywhere in Australia wherever there are trees and birds.

Now that nesting season is finally over in our neck of the woods the male birds have stopped attacking all who venture into their territory as I explained in this post previously.

They have gone back to minding their own business and filling the air with their lovely carolling.
I bet that sound will make Aussies living overseas just a little bit homesick!

Cheers.

PS.     1. The noise in the background of the Youtube clip is mainly Lorikeets screeching.
2. All the photos today are from the Internet

FAVOURITE THINGS FRIDAY - ALL ABOUT BARK

Edit: I've just realised that it's FTF and since this post was a waffle about a favourite thing I thought I'd make this my FTF post too.

....................................................

After reading this post and this one too I have been taking more notice of the trees around me
or their bark in particular.

I've mentioned many times my love of trees and most of the time that is mainly because of their leafiness,
or their pretty flowers,
or the wonderful shade they give  ........
but , when I thought about it, some of them I love because of their bark.

So I've been taking more notice of bark as I move around in my day to day doings and I've found lots of very interesting examples to show you.

Some type of palm/cycad tree

Iron bark

Paper bark

Spotty bark

Smooth bark

Stringy bark

Scribbly bark
("The scribbly gum tree is a eucalyptus tree with a very smooth, pale trunk. The distinctive brownish 'scribbles' are made by the larvae of the tiny scribbly moth.")

Colourful bark -Snow Gum

and even bark that looks like a  grumpy face !

Cheers.

PS. The last four photos are examples of the bark of Australian trees that I  found on the internet.
